Cape Town - Former South African seamer Alfonso Thomas has joined English county club Surrey as a white ball bowling consultant for both the One Day Cup and T20 Blast campaigns this season.

Thomas, regarded as one of the finest death bowlers in the game until his retirement in 2015, will work alongside Surrey's bowling coach Geoff Arnold for both one-day formats.

The 41-year-old was appointed as the bowling coach of the West Indies in February.

Thomas only played one T20I for South Africa in 2007 against Pakistan and took 3 for 25.

As a right-arm seamer, Thomas made his name in county cricket with his eight year spell at Somerset during which he claimed 137 wickets in T20 cricket and 113 more in the List A game.

Thomas also regularly stepped in as captain for his county, including through to the semi-finals of the 2011 Champions League.

He also represented sides in the Indian Premier League, Australia's Big Bash, the South African Ram Slam T20 and the Bangladesh Premier League.

Surrey CCC Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart, said: "Alfonso will be a very good addition to the coaching team with his deep knowledge of the game, especially in the situations white ball cricket can provide. I'm very confident he will act as an excellent mentor to our bowlers and work well alongside Geoff Arnold."
